Skin Infection Treatment for Eczema Patients

When you have eczema, your skin can often become cracked or broken, which can enable infections to take hold. You can reduce the risk of infection by avoiding scratching and getting eczema treatment at the UK clinic to keep your symptoms under control.

Bacterial Infections

A bacterial skin infection can make your eczema symptoms worse, and your usual eczema treatments might not be able to provide the usual relief. The affected area is likely to feel sore and swollen. You may also notice some small white spots, a yellow crust on your skin, or fluid oozing out. The infection could also give you a fever or other flu-like symptoms. It is important to seek treatment for these symptoms as soon as possible. Your doctor can help by prescribing a course of antibiotics to clear the infection. You may need to take this as tablets, but it can sometimes be applied as a cream. You will also be given new pots or tubes of your usual eczema treatment to start using once the infection is gone so that you don’t re-infect yourself.

Viral Infections

Eczema can also become infected by the virus that usually causes cold sores. The herpes simplex virus can cause an infection called eczema herpeticum. The symptoms include painful patches of eczema that quickly get worse and develop small, fluid-filled blisters. When the blisters burst, they can leave an open sore on your skin. You may also develop a high fever and feel generally unwell. If you notice symptoms like this you should contact your dermatologist. Your doctor can prescribe an antiviral treatment to eliminate the infection.
