How to Take Care of the Skin in Summer?

The most important thing you can do to take care of the skin in summer is to protect it from the sun. You should take regular breaks from the sun, try to stay in the shade during the hottest parts of the day, and cover up with long sleeves, sunglasses and a broad brimmed hat. It is also important to use sun cream to prevent burning and sun damage that could put you at risk of skin cancer.

Wear the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin

  • Choose the right SPF or sun protection factor for your skin. Fair skin that burns easily will need a higher SPF, but everyone should wear at least SPF 15 on sunny days. Generally, you will be able to stay out in the sun 15 times longer when wearing SPF 15 than without any sun cream, 25 times longer with SPF 25, and so on. However, remember that sweating or swimming can remove your sunscreen so you may need to reapply it more often than this.
  • Make sure that your sunscreen protects you against both UVA and UVB rays as both can damage your skin.
  • Pick a sunscreen that suits your skin type. You can choose moisturising sun creams for dry skin, non-comedogenic products for oily or spot prone skin, or sunscreens designed for sensitive skin.

Skincare Tips for Summer

In addition to protecting your skin against the sun, you may also need to change your skincare routine in summer:

  • Shower after swimming in pools as the chlorine can dry out your skin
  • Try exfoliating more often if your skin is suffering from sweat and clogged pores
  • Use aloe vera or after-sun cream to soothe your skin if it does get burned
  • Make sure you’re staying hydrated as it’s good for your health and your skin
