New Cause of Skin Cancer – Sun Beds

Doctors in the US are calling for the announcement that ‘sun beds cause skin cancer’ to be made by the US surgeon general in the place of sun beds merely being associated with skin cancer.

Dr. Robert P. Dellavalle, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine noted that when the US Surgeon General finally announced that smoking causes lung cancer in 1964, there was a shift in awareness and policymaking, followed by a decline in smoking and lung cancer rates.

Dr. Dellavalle says, changing the words so the endorsed public message clearly says “UV tanning causes skin cancer” will save lives.  In other words,”reduce smoking and you reduce lung cancer; reduce UV exposure and you reduce skin cancer.”

Some acne sufferers not collecting their treatment

A study of acne suffers in the US found that surprisingly, around a quarter of them had not collected their prescription for treatment.

Acne is one of the commonest conditions treated by dermatologists and affects about 90% of the population at some stage of their lives.  The treatments can be divided into 3 main types:

  1. antibiotics
  2. hormone suppression
  3. retinoids

Antibiotics and hormone suppression will usually bring about good control of the disease whilst retinoids taken orally give a complete cure in most cases although the side-effects of dry skin and chapped lips can be off-putting to many.

Disease severity markers that will help your dermatologist decide on whether retinoids are the correct choice for you would include:

  1. how long you have suffered for
  2. If there is any scarring to your skin
  3. Which other therapies you have tried that haven’t worked
  4. What sort of psychological effect the disease is having on your life.

When the decision has been made to commence, oral retinoids clear around 95% of people with acne and most of them stay clear for the long-term.  The effects can be quite remarkable as shown below:
