Is Alopecia Curable? How Can I Stop Hair Fall and Hair Loss?

Date: Mar 2019

Alopecia is a medical term that is used to describe hair loss. Hair loss can happen for many different reasons, so the possibilities for treatment depend on the cause of your alopecia.

Types of Alopecia

Some of the common causes of hair loss include:
  • Hair loss due to stress, malnutrition or chemotherapy
  • Skin conditions
  • Traction alopecia
  • Alopecia areata
  • Male pattern baldness
  • Female pattern baldness
Each of these issues needs to be treated in a different way and the chances of a complete cure are different in every case. The results you get from your treatment will depend on the cause of your hair loss and how well your body responds.

Treatments for Alopecia

Some types of hair loss are temporary and the hair will grow back in time. For example, if you have hair loss due to stress, malnutrition, or medication the hair will often reappear once the issue has been addressed. The effects of traction alopecia should also disappear once the physical strain on your hair has been eliminated. You can minimise hair fall and encourage growth by eating a balanced diet, managing stress and avoiding any strain on your hair (such as tight hairstyles or hats).

In cases where the hair loss is linked to a skin condition, such as an infection, it is often possible to treat the underlying cause. As long as there is no scarring on your scalp, this should allow your hair to grow back.

Alopecia areata is caused by inflammation that is linked to your immune system. We don’t know why the immune system starts attacking the hair follicles and there is currently no cure. However, the hair will often grow back by itself and there are treatments such as steroid creams that can encourage growth.

Medication can often help with male and female pattern baldness, but there is no cure. Men can use either finasteride or minoxidil, but only minoxidil is suitable for women. The medication can prevent hair loss for many people, but they don’t work for everyone and the effects only last as long as you continue with the treatment.

Can Hair Loss Be Cured?

It isn’t always possible to cure hair loss. The treatments can slow down hair loss for many people, but you may need to try several treatments before finding one that works for you. Some people may never find one that works. In most cases, the hair that you have already lost won’t be able to grow back again, which is why it’s so important to see a dermatologist right away if you’re experiencing hair loss.

We can do a lot to stop hair fall or slow down hair loss for many people, but we don’t yet have a simple cure that will help everyone with alopecia. However, new treatments are being developed all the time, so we may one day be able to stop hair fall and even to help lost hair to grow back.
